Great anticipation and excitement about Festival of Running
Great excitement reigns among participants and organizers of this coming weekend's unique Festival of Running, which will be presented for the first time at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
A list of iconic singers, DJ’s, VIP’s and South African sporting stars will add lustre to the Gautrain Festival of Running, a unique historic event and arguably the first of its kinds in a South African sport stadium, at SuperSport Park this weekend.
On the eve of the Gautrain Festival of Running, set to start on 7th April and continue on 8th April, 18 celebrities have confirmed that they will form part of this glittering and eye-catching event.
The Gautrain Festival of Running, set to become an annual sporting event for outdoor strollers, athletes, corporate relay teams and even mother-and-baby pram walkers, is something completely new to sporting crowds.
Pierre Joubert, Commercial Manager of the Multiply Titans, said the festival will commence on Friday when a corporate relay that can lure a capacity of 1200 competitors or 300 teams, will start at 10:00. All participants amongst the 1200 will receive medals.
“We already have 45 corporate teams lined up for the event,” Joubert said.
“The former SA Open winner, golfer Brandon Stone, the young emerging cricket star Aiden Markram, the former South African fast bowler Andre Nel, the fast-emerging 21-year old international cricket star Lungi Ngidi, the Multiply Titans star Junior Dala and the Northerns Cricket President, John Wright, have already confirmed their presence.
“We are privileged to receive confirmation that Groot FM presenter Ruben Delmage, versatile South African actor and MC Coco Merckel, DJ Ankletap (Bryce Clarke), the singer Kevin Leo, the sports announcer Arnold Geerdts, the singer Pieter Koen and Prof. Cheryl de la Rey, Vice-Chancellor of TUKS will attend.
“Marketing guru, DJ and Producer Nkanyezi Kubheka, artist Lasoul and well renowned South African actor Seputla Sebogodi are amongst more celebrities who will ignite this colourful two-day extravaganza with their presence,” said Joubert.
On Saturday 8th April, the festival will kick off with a family fun run limited to 500 participants from 07:00 to 07:45.
The ‘pram-walk’ is destined to be another draw card on Saturday 8th April, limited to 300 participants.
“The family fun run and the pram walk will definitely become very popular inscriptions on the annual Gautrain Festival of Running event. Families would love it. The safe and secure environment as well as the fun-filled atmosphere is set to endear the Festival of Running to thousands upon South Africans in the near future,” said Joubert.
One of the highlights of day two of the festival of running which will challenge competitors who love to challenge for line honours, will be the solo challenge of 4 hours which will be limited to 200 runners. It starts at 09:15 and finishes at 13:15. It is an event which could set new challenges to marathon and semi ultra-marathon athletes, especially those who have had a taste of the 56 km Two Oceans marathon in Cape Town.
An endurance event which will be an elite addition to a South African calendar of long-distance event, will be the team challenge relay in which teams of four will compete in an eight hour race from 09:10 to 17:10. In all, 250 teams, will challenge for podium places.
“Perhaps this ingenious use of SuperSport Park could in future serve an international best practice of how to make world-class use of a sporting stadium in order to enlarge its bouquet of utilization and in ensuring that it is even more financially self-sustaining,” said Jacques Faul, Chief Executive Officer of the Multiply Titans.
Online entries for the Family Fun Run as well as the Super Mom’s Walk are still open at www.titans.co.za.
