TUT sports legends plow back with unique event

TUT's sports legends found a unique way to assist needy students.

A unique sporting money raiser in aid of needy students will be expanded for greater impact this year.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Sport Legends is a non-profit organisation established by a group of former students in all nine provinces and some neighbouring countries.

It was set up in January 2015 when the group formed a cricket team to play against the then current TUT cricket team in a friendly match to raise money for the club.

From this game the idea was born to make something more of the event. In 2016 the event evolved to three sporting codes.

Soccer and netball was added and a decision was made to host a sports day annually with matches between current and former students.
Due to the excitement it generated, competitiveness of the games and attendance attracted, the potential was spotted to use these social games to the benefit of needy students.

Rising tuition fees could exclude some deserving young people so the organisation decided to contribute to this great cause with this unique annual money raiser.

The objective is to offer bursaries to deserving students that need to hone their skills and capacity through education.

This year’s event will take place on 16 September starting with a breakfast at 08:00, followed by the action then the closing ceremony and dinner from 18:30 to 22:00. Two more sporting codes have been added to this year’s programme – women’s soccer and rugby.

Among the legends and former students that will participate this year are Springbok Bandise Maku, Blue Bulls players John Mametsa and Kholekile Ralo, soccer players Thabang Mabusela, Floyd Mbhele and Kealebetswe Diale as well as former Titans cricket player, Ethy Mbhalati.

Former TUT sports personalities and sponsors who wish to get involved could contact legends’ central executive committee chairperson Wiseman Nyamza per email at Nyamzalw@webmail.co.za  He can also be reached by phone on 073-401-4431.
