Northern Academy defend Curro trophy for the third time
Northern Academy defeated Curro Hazeldean 4-3 on penalty shootout to be crowned the 2018 Curro soccer festival champions.
Northern Academy were on Saturday crowned the annual Curro soccer festival champions for the third time in a row.
The tournament was held at Curro Thatchfield sports ground in Centurion.
The defending champions overcame Curro Hazeldean 4-3 on penalties following a 0-0 deadlock at full time.
On the way to the final, Academy thrashed Curro Secunda 6-0, drew 0-0 with Hazeldean, beat Meridian Rustenburg 2-1 and Curro Thatchfield 1-0.
Northern Academy head coach Orphan Mfuloane said his side first won the title in 2016, beating Cornerstone 3-1.

He praised his side for a job well done. “I am very proud of my boys, they played well.”
Mfuloane said his players had a bright future in football and wished them good luck in their future.
He, however, expressed concern about the standard of the Curro competition.
“The standard of the competition has declined since last year. It is now very poor.”
He said the first two soccer festivals in 2015 and 2016 had been tough.
Mfuloane said a positive attitude and preparedness were much-needed for the tournament to up its standard.
Curro Thatchfield head of sports Kerdrick Haggard said the tournament, which gave learners opportunity to play more games and develop their skills, was a major success.
He said the tournament had grown from having only boys’ soccer teams to now including girls.
The tournament organisers are planning to invite more teams for the next edition.
