Local tennis administrator celebrates 25th Grand Slam

A local tennis administrator from Centurion will be serving for the 25th time at a Grand Slam tennis event at this year's Wimbledon tournament in London.

South Africa has four officials on duty at this year’s Wimbledon tennis tournament, which started earlier this week.

The trio of Denerick October and Glen Campbell (both Western Cape) as well as Tebogo Maleke from Gauteng Central were already doing duty as line officials at the Qualifying event, which took place last week at Roehampton.

The experienced Iain Smith of Centurion, a long-time serving tennis administrator, will form part of the main tournament as one of the review officials.

This is Smith’s 11th year working at Wimbledon. Ironically his first Grand Slam was Wimbledon and this year’s event will be his 25th Grand Slam doing officiating duty.

“Tennis South Africa (TSA) is very fortunate to have a group of officials that have been asked to be a part of a major tournament as big as Wimbledon, and this is a fifth year that we have officials being part of the qualifying event, which speaks volumes on how our officials are compared with officials from the rest of the world,” said Smith, who is TSA’s technical manager.

According to Smith to be part of any Grand Slam tournament is a pinnacle for any official.

“It’s not just the players who strive to be in action at these big tournaments. It is certainly also milestones in the careers of administrators to service at this high level,” Smith concluded.

On the tennis front South Africa is expected to have three players involved in this year’s Wimbledon tournament with the fit-again Kevin Anderson (expected to be available after shaking off a niggling injury), rising star Lloyd Harris and doubles specialist Raven Klaasen.
