Irene Villagers’ women’s team wins third consecutive club title

Women's cricket is currently thriving at the Irene Villagers Cricket Club and the club's top women's team recently won their third consecutive league title.

The Irene Villagers cricket club’s women’s team has shown once again this past season that they currently have no equal in the Northerns Cricket leagues.

The ladies of this club ended the 2020/21 season unbeaten in the Northerns Cricket Union Women’s Premier League to win the title as Northerns’ best women’s team.

With that, they completed a unique hat-trick, having also been crowned champions in this league in the previous two seasons.

Gopika Ramkilawon was the team’s best batsman with 185 runs in four games, while Nicole Slier and Aabha Joshi did the best with the ball. They each took six wickets in four games.

Three members of the team were called up for higher honours during the season when they had the opportunity to play provincial cricket. Eliz-Mari Marx and Kayleigh Tapp represented Northerns, while Angelic Klingenberg had the opportunity to represent Mpumalanga’s provincial team.

Much of the team’s success is attributed to their experienced coach, Douglas Yates. He has been in charge of the team since the 2017/18 season.

Villagers currently has 21 teams registered in the junior, men’s and women’s structures under the jurisdiction of the Northerns Cricket Union. The club is also the only one within these structures to have two women’s teams in the Premier Women’s League. Their second team finished third in this league this past season.

After the past season, the club can boast four champion teams in the respective leagues. This includes the u.9 platinum, u.11 Platinum, u.15 Platinum (defended their title for the second year) and Ladies Premier League teams.

Women cricket lovers and players interested in joining the club are invited to contact Douglas Yates at douglasyates19@gmail.com or phone him on 0762932230.
