Memorial service for disabled sports writer presented at alma mater

Due to Covid regulations, only 50 invited friends and family members will be able to attend the funeral service for the well-known disabled sports writer Dan Lombard, who passed away last week, but a YouTube streaming service will be available to allow a wider audience access to the service.

Details have been revealed about the memorial service of Pretoria’s beloved disabled sports writer, Dan Lombard, who recently passed away due to complications following an operation to remove kidney stones. A memorial service has been arranged for Thursday 24 June (Today) at 15:00. The venue will be at Pretoria Boys High School, his alma mater. Lombard was a matric pupil at the school when he became paralyzed on the rugby field in 2008 due to a freak accident and he was later classified as a C5 quadriplegic. He still had a close bond with the school for the past 13 years. Due to COVID regulations only 50 people will be permitted to attend the memorial service. Given this challenge the family had to make the attendance of Lombard’s memorial on an invite basis only. However, it has been arranged that the service and proceedings will also be accessible to other friends and family members of Lombard via a streaming service. This streaming service of the proceedings can be followed on YouTube by via the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCs6M5204xI Lombard commanded the admiration of many in journalism and rugby circles with the way he overcame his great setback and later became a very successful sports writer. Later he also founded the Tiger Stripes Revolution, a registered Section 21 company, with which he wanted to help others in similar situations through trauma counselling, mental health empowerment coaching and fundraisers to assist the disabled. Lombard is survived by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
