Disappointment for cyclists after popular race in Maluti mountains cancelled due to Covid’s third wave

Frustrated cyclists, longing for good racing, will have to wait at least another year to be able to ride in the Maluti mountains near Lesotho again, after the 2021 Cycle Lab Maluti Double 90 race was cancelled.

The Pedal Power Association and Cycle Lab last week announced the cancellation of the 2021 Cycle Lab Maluti Double 90 race.

According to these organisers of the race, the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in more stringent lockdown restrictions prohibiting mass participation events with strict limits placed on outdoor gatherings.

This poses various challenges for the Maluti Double 90 being a team event with 125 teams entered and 12 riders per team.

The event was set to take place on Saturday 18 September in Clarens in the Eastern Free State.  It is not the first time that The Pedal Power Association has had to make this difficult decision.  The Cycle Lab Maluti Double 90 has had to be postponed or cancelled since the first Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020, just weeks before the event was scheduled to take place.

“It is not a decision that was taken lightly but we have to keep the safety of the riders and playing our part in limiting the spread of Covid-19 as our highest priorities.  This type of event takes major logistical coordination not only for PPA as the organiser but also for the teams and currently there is just too much uncertainty surrounding the possibility of holding events,” said PPA Chairperson Steven Hayward.

The date for the 2022 event will be secured soon but teams can prepare to be on the start line in Clarens in mid-April 2022.  All teams with an existing entry for the 2020 and 2021 event will automatically be deferred to 2022.

Updates will be available on the event website and social media pages as new information becomes available. Visit the website at: www.malutidouble90.co.za
