Former world champion in action at boxing tournament in Pretoria

Boxing is back in Pretoria with Saturday night's ‘Battle of the Giants 6’, which will take place at the Parkview Mall in the east of the city.

After a drought of more than a year due to the Covid crisis, there will be boxing action again in Pretoria this coming weekend, when 5th Element Promotions’ sixth Battle of the Warriors tournament will be presented.

Although the first five tournaments in the Battle of the Warriors series have been hosted at the Sun Arena in Menlyn Maine, the sixth tournament, which takes place this coming Saturday (September 18) will move to the new The Metropolis venue in the Parkview Shopping Center in the East of Pretoria.

A solid fight card with seven exciting fights was launched by the promoters this past weekend.

The biggest excitement among boxing fans in connection with this tournament is the return of Tommy “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen to the ring, after an absence of two and a half years.

The 33-year-old Oosthuizen is the former holder of one junior and three senior world titles and for many years he was regarded as South Africa’s most talented boxer.

During the first decade of his professional boxing career, he was undefeated in 29 consecutive fights, while also winning a Youth World title (IBO light heavyweight) and three senior world titles – WBC (Light Heavy weight), IBO World (World Super Middle wight) and IBO (Light Heavy Weigh).

Recently Oosthuizen went through difficult times and in addition to the Covid crisis, he also had personal problems and delays that interfered with his boxing career. However, he told Rekord that he is currently in great shape and that he is now ready to return to the ring, after ironing out his problems.

On Saturday the lanky former world champ from Boksburg will fight against Youssouf Mwanza from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

— As boxing fans got used to during 5th Element Promotions’ tournaments, there will also be two heavyweight bouts on Saturday as part of the fight card. Chris “The Wolf” Thompson moved from cruiser weight to heavy weight and he will fight Mussa Adjibu of Malawi, while two young new heavy weight boxers, Jean Pierre Steenkamp and Sean Potgieter will also face each other.

Two welterweight fights as well as a women’s fight are also part of the fight card.
