Junior golf star from Pretoria defends Silver Salver title in Irene
A schoolboy from Pretoria became only the fourth player to win the Gauteng North Silver Salver golf tournament two years in a row.
Christiaan Maas from Pretoria Country Club became only the 4th player to defend his title in the Silver Salver national amateur tournament.
The Silver Salver is a 54-hole stroke play championship with a cut after 36 holes. It is considered one of the most important amateur golf tournaments in South Africa.
The only other players in history who were able to successfully defend this title were Hugh Baiocchi (1968 & 1969), George Schwartzel (1982 & 1983) and Mark Murless (1993 & 1994).
The 58th edition of the GNGU Silver Salver was played last week at Irene Country Club the home of Gauteng North Golf Union.

In the first round on Friday the players experienced a 45 min lightning delay. This however didn’t stop Jordan Duminy who carded a fantastic opening round of 65, 7 under par.
Duminy consolidated his lead by carding a two under par, 70 in round two. The notable mover however was Christiaan Maas who carded a six under par, 66 to move him into tied second place along with Samuel Simpson and Crismar Engelbrecht.
On Sunday however Maas showed his class by carding scores of 66 and 70 to win the Silver Salver by 272 (-16), seven shots ahead of nearest contender Samuel Simpson.
With this performance, the young golfer and pupil of Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool showed once again that he can be a future golf superstar.
