Rain in Paarl robs Titans of a chance to win against Boland

Despite the fact that rainy weather in Paarl robbed the Titans of a definite chance of victory in their CSA 4-Day Domestic Series match against Boland, the men of Centurion are still third on the log in the series.

With Neil Brand leading from the front, the Titans were probably on their way to victory over Boland in the CSA 4-Day Domestic Series this past weekend, but due to rain, no play was possible on the last day and, despite their lead of 170 runs, the visitors did not get the chance to win the match.

The Momentum Multiply Titans were eventually inspired in their first innings by a fifth career red-ball century from Brand (111 off 230 balls) as the men from Centurion clocked 308 all out against Boland at Boland Park.

Boland started day two with their opening batters at the crease with Cebo Tshiki and Isma-eel Gafieldien tasked with the first innings reply. Gafieldien finally gave his team’s first innings a bit of prestige with his contribution of 97 runs.

The home team eventually scored only 234 runs in their first innings, meaning they were already 74 runs behind at that stage.

Ayabulela Gqamane (3/41) and Simon Harmer (3/52), well-supported by Corbin Bosch (2/45) and Dayyaan Galiem (2/ 39), were the stand out performers in an impressive Titans bowling performance during Boland’s first innings.

With the bat and with a decent lead in hand, the Titans made a measured start out in the middle before losing two quick wickets to go 23/2. This brought Neil Brand (32*) in to help guide the visitors to 96/3 with one day’s play to go.

So, by the end of day three, with the Titans at 96/3, the home side’s deficit was 170 runs, indicating that the Titans certainly had a chance to clinch the match on the final day if play continued normally.

Unfortunately for the men from Centurion, inclement weather in Paarl meant there was no play possible on day four. The two teams therefore had to settled on a draw.

The Titans’ next game in the CSA 4-Day Domestic Series is against the Knights in Bloemfontein and will start on Sunday 19 December.
