Pretoria marksman is SA’s national champ
The two top marksmen at the past weekend's South African Air Rifle Field Target 2022 Championship near Pretoria had to determine the overall winner through a sudden death shoot-out.
Six Protea air rifle field target shooters will be off to the International Championships in Italy in August this year, following the exciting three-day SA championships this past weekend at Kommandonek near Hartebeespoort Dam.
Wian Strydom from Pretoria emerged as South African Air Rifle Field Target 2022 Champion following a sudden death shoot-out against Machiel Basson from the East Rand who ended second.
In third place was Heinri Brink, also from Pretoria.
The nationals kicked off on Saturday 19 March in favourable conditions, but the competitors found the courses extremely tough – some even said they were the most difficult to date.
Due to the difficulty level, the daily scores out of 50, weren’t very high with the exception of a few star performers.
The top score on day one was 43, achieved by Wian Strydom, who also took top spot-on day two with 44, but day three belonged to Machiel Basson, who shot a magnificent 47.
Basson and Strydom tied at 130 out of 150, leading to the shoot-out that went Strydom’s way.
