Prince takes Moretele Park by storm
Prince Nyadzawela of Soshanguve performs at the Tribute Concert at Moretele Park in Mamelodi on Saturday.
Emerging local Afro-jazz singer Prince Nyadzawela is fast ascending the ladder to stardom.
Nyadzawela of Soshanguve joined an explosive line-up of performers at the Tribute Concert at Moretele Park in Mamelodi on Saturday.
Nyadzawela, supported by his backing vocalist, Luvhuno Buda performed three great songs Nyadzawela, N’wali (both from his debut album Zwovha zwo Naka Hani) and Iyani niyo Fudzeya (from his new album Sendelani Tsini) and revellers clearly approved.
“For me Nyadzawela will always be a great song. It is dedicated to my late mother, her name was Nyadzewela,” he said, adding its message of hope was also important to him. “You cannot give up in life because of another person. Even if people criticise [you], do not give up.”
Nyadzawela is the 2013 SA Traditional Music Award best Venda album winner.
Hundreds from all corners of South Africa converged on Moretele Park on Saturday carrying their camp chairs, cooler bags stocked with food and drink, to welcome Spring in style at the annual Moretele Park Tribute Concert.
The concert is a celebration of local talent aimed at honouring and paying tribute to South Africa’s musical icons who have made a major contribution to the arts and offer a platform for the development of local talent to shine.
The event has attained iconic status as the biggest and most popular one-day, open air, music concert in the country.
Nyadzawela shared the stage with big guns such as Caiphus Semenya, Oliver Mtukudzi, Bhudaza, Vusi Nova, Kanda Bongo, Mango Groove, Vusi Mahlasela, Thandiswa Mazwai, The Soil, Black Motion, Afrotraction .
“It was quite a honour for me. It is a sign that I am fast growing in stature,” he said.
After performing at the Tribute Concert, Nyadzawela rushed to the Tshivhenda Music Awards (Tshimas) organised by SABC2 in conjunction with Phalaphala FM, where he had been nominated.
But all the gongs for which he was nominated, went to gospel artist Mpho Regalo, who was killed on Saturday night in a car accident.
This year’s Tshimas was attended by some of Mzansi’s A list celebrities including television soapie Muvhango hotshots Gabriel Temudzani (Chief), McDonald Ndou (KK), Buhle Samuels (Matshidiso),Lesley Musina (Ndalamo) and 7de Laan’s Mimi Mahlasela (Aggie) and Masego Sehoole (Pulane).
