Real actors and actresses visited 30 homes in Pretoria on Sunday as part of the inaugural Home Theatre SA festival.
The Home Theatre festival is an initiative of the State Theatre to put together a string of productions to be performed in the comfort of the homes of hosts.
The shows were based on the hosts’ personal stories.
Tshiamo Sefula who lives in a Hatfield commune was one of the guests who were invited to witness a performance by renowned stage performer Don Maleele.
She said the performance was an opportunity for the girls to really do something together.
“As we continue doing our own thing, it would give us something to talk about,” Sefula said.
For someone who has never visited a theatre, Sefula said it was an experience for her.
Actor Maleele said Home Theatre SA was a dream most actors wanted to become involved in.
“We have all been saying we should take theatre to the people but we did not have the ways of doing it,” Maleele said.
He said the shows performed were relevant to the people as it told their stories.
“We thought of a general problem in the commune full of girls and I performed a play out of that.”
Other actors who performed on Sunday included Thato Molamu who played the role of Nicholas Nomvete in Generations. He performed for Koketso Butelezi in Block K Soshanguve.
Presley Chweneyagae who played the role of Tsotsi in the Oscar-winning movie Tsotsi performed for Thabo Lekala in Mamelodi West.
Home Theatre is an original concept from a Brazillian, Marcus Faustini and was first performed in 2013 at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in the United Kingdom.
