Police probing fiery crash
The man hit the barrier at high speed, and the vehicle caught fire on impact.
Police have opened a culpable homicide docket after a motorist burned to death east of Pretoria on Friday morning.
Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Collete Weilbach said the accident happened on Garsfontein Road near the N1 off ramp in Lynnwood Glen around 05:00.
“Most of the information is sketchy but police are investigating culpable homicide,” she said.
Weilbach said emergency services confirmed a man burned to death in the wreckage.
An eye witness and towing service employee who did not want to be named said the Fortuner’s driver was speeding from the N1.
“The man was speeding and crashed against the concrete barriers. It broke off the highway and landed inside the office park,” said the witness.
“The guy was still inside when the car caught fire. The vehicle didn’t collide with any other vehicle.”
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse confirmed a man was found dead after the vehicle caught fire on impact.
“The car hit the concrete barrier and went off the bridge. On impact, it caught fire. The person inside burned to death beyond recognition.”
The fire was extinguished.
An employee inside the office park, Katlego Madiba, said he believed three people were inside the vehicle when it caught fire.
Most staff arrived to find the scarred Fortuner inside the office park premises.
Most employees were told to use other entry points as police had cordoned off the area.
“Most people were not even allowed into the office park on the Friday morning,” said Madiba.
