Journalism stars announced

The awards highlighted exceptional students ready to make valuable contributions to media organisations.

The Tshwane University of Technology‘s announced its annual journalism award winners on Tuesday.

The awards recognise students who excelled in their practical and academic courses in print-, online-, television- and radio journalism.

The ceremony was held at its Soshanguve north campus.

Thato Mahlangu was this year’s winner of the Rekord Noweto student journalist of the year award.

Lecturer Hilke Steenkamp described Mahlangu “truly a deserving candidate”.

She said he compiled a diverse portfolio while covering stories for the newspaper.

“Not only did his portfolio exhibit the work of a budding journalist with a keen sense for news, Mahlangu also wrote various in-depth investigative reporting pieces,” said Steenkamp.

“Judging by the number of front pages that featured his work, it is evident that his news packages were relevant to (Rekord) Noweto’s target audience.”

Mahlangu was born in Ekangala, Mpumalanga, but now calls Mamelodi and Soshanguve home.

He said he knew writing was in his veins as he had gathered magazine clippings from old Bona and Drum magazines from the age of six.

He said he felt honoured to receive such a prestigious award.

To him journalism was about bringing change no matter how small, he said.

Steenkamp said the awards highlighted exceptional students ready to make valuable contributions to media organisations.

“We believe these students form part of a new generation of journalists who exhibit a range of applied competencies and practical multimedia skills required to tell uniquely South African stories,” she said.

Dikeledi Moetji, who majored in broadcasting, was selected as the best journalism student of the year.

She told aspiring journalists: “If you love what you do, there are no chances of going wrong.”

Moetji said she would like to become a news anchor as she had always been passionate about television and radio.
