March over LGBTIQ+ rights
“This protest will call for the police to do more when it comes to LGBTIQ+ hate crimes, particularly against lesbian women, and in cases involving abuse and violence against women and children.”
Pretoria’s LGBTIQ+ community is to hold a march to highlight their plight.
Lerato Phalakatshela, of the body that represents lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning people, said the picket will be held outside their Hatfield offices on Tuesday.
Through its “not hate” campaign, organisers of the picket expect at least 100 people outside the NGO’s gates on Pretorius Street.
“We want to condemn the ongoing deadly attacks against LGBTIQ+ people in South Africa.”
He said the demonstration will also highlight how the criminal justice system was consistently letting down the LGBTIQ+ community.
“Members of the LGBTIQ+ community are urged to show their support by gathering at the offices from 9am,” he said.
There will also be another picket by the DA outside SAPS headquarters, Maupa Naga Building, on the corner Park and Troye streets in Sunnyside.
“This protest will call for the police to do more when it comes to LGBTIQ+ hate crimes, particularly against lesbian women, and in cases involving abuse and violence against women and children.”
The DA will be handing over a memorandum to the police demanding that they take urgent and effective action in these cases, according to Phalakatshela.
