Call for city artists to attend empowerment festival
''The Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival not only showcases art, design, film, and music, but also provides inspirational workshops and entrepreneurial support.''
Pretoria based artists are invited to attend the Constitution Hill Basha Uhuru art, design, film, photo and music festival.
The flagship youth arts festival commemorates the youth of 1976 who sacrificed their lives for freedom.

Each year the festival showcases contemporary art, design, film, and music.
Constitution Hill CEO Dawn Robertson said the Constitution Hill was not a static space stuck in time but rather a movement that connected the past, the present and the future through sparks of experiences like Basha Uhuru.
”Through this festival, we preserve the past and the sacrifices made by the youth of ’76 making it accessible to young people today whilst transforming the future through real inspirational engagement at multiple creative intersections.”
The event was in its sixth year, the 2018 edition is a collaboration with Nando’s, Department of Arts and Culture, Gauteng Tourism, Gauteng Film Commission and Gauteng Enterprise Propeller.

The three-day annual festival takes place from 28 June to 30 June.
Robertson said the Constitution Hill, together with its partners, is committed to nurturing South African emerging creative talent.
”The Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival not only showcases art, design, film, and music, but also provides inspirational workshops and entrepreneurial support programmes for young creatives,” said publicist Maria McCloy.

Opening on 28 June at 18:30 is a poster exhibition by renowned photographer Jodi Bieber in collaboration with 45 young people.
Designer and curator Brenton Maart will present some works during the exhibition.
Another exhibition will include a selection of objects from the gay and lesbian memory in action archive.

McCloy said some ofthe films to be shown would be The People vs Patriarchy on 28 June and Five Fingers for Marseilles on the 29th.
”Also on the 29th Words of Freedom, by poet Sabelo Soko, will take place at 18:00,” she said.

The festival ends on Saturday, 30 June with a concert starting at 13:00 that will feature Black Motion, Sho Madjozi, Samthing Soweto, K.O, Skwatta Kamp, Blk Jks, Moonchild Sanelly, Prokid and Zoe Modiga among others.
