VIDEO: ‘The Voice SA’ finalist calls Pretoria home
Emil Paul (21) has taken the South African music industry by storm.
If you’ve been watching The Voice SA over the past few weeks, you would’ve noticed a brand new talent. He comes from a musical background, but still finds it hard to perform in public. This shy but charming man who has taken the music industry by storm, is 21-year-old Emil Paul.
Paul confesses to having a bit of stage fright but still enjoys performing. He has been playing the piano and many other musical instruments for years.
Paul regards his song ‘Elke Noot’ as the pinnacle of his career thus far.
“The fact that it did so incredibly well, and got so much positive feedback really amazes me. This indicates that I’m probably doing something right and that I should keep going at it.”
Although Paul is regarded as the newbie, he promises to continue recording and releasing new music for as long as people want to keep hearing what he has to sing.

When it comes to his role models, Paul speaks of Elvis Blue, who usually sings about the issues of the heart. But he would definitely like to collaborate with artists like Joshua na die Reën or Charlize Berg.
“I think I can learn from them and their style of music.”
“I feel that music is a language of its own. It’s a language that everybody understands and I communicate at my best when my sing about my message,” he explains.
Paul likes music that people can relate to. Music that speaks to people, sometimes he pours personal experiences into his lyrics, and that makes it a powerful, personal journey.
“When words fail, music must speak. International artists like Demi Lovato and Shawn Mendes have a big influence on me.”
Two of the biggest challenges that Paul has had to deal with in the industry is being unique and accepting himself as he is. He says that coming up with unique and ground-breaking music can be tough, but that it’s all worthwhile at the end.
“In the beginning I focused too much on what people were telling me they wanted to hear or see from me. But I’ve realised that the real supporters will listen to me regardless of what I look like or who I am.”

Paul plans on commencing with a degree in music production in 2020, and looks forward to seeing what his music career has in store for him in 2019.
Paul just released his new single called ‘Man van Staal’ and is in his words a perfect rendition of what Father’s Day is all about.
“It’s the perfect gift to your father for Father’s Day. It can be described as a pop song with a bit of an acoustic influence. It lets you know that each of us can learn something from our own man of steel.”
Tune in to see Emil Paul as part of Francois van Coke’s team on The Voice SA.
