Local scrapyard owner arrested in cable theft sting

“This week alone Saulsville, Pienaarsport Garankuwa and Pretoria-Johannesburg trains were negatively affected by cable theft.”

The Metrorail in Gauteng took the fight against cable theft to a higher notch with the arrest of a scrapyard owner in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said the owner was arrested for possession of stolen PRASA cables.

She said Prasa Protection Services had followed two people selling cables valued at R50 000 into a scrapyard opposite Belle Ombré Station.

“This week alone Saulsville, Pienaarsport Garankuwa and Pretoria-Johannesburg trains were negatively affected by cable theft,” she said.

“Metrorail condemns in the strongest possible terms the theft of infrastructure components. The impact of cable theft has a major impact on the train service, commuters and the economy of the province.”

Mofokeng pleaded with the public to report any criminal activity to Metrorail Protection Services on 011-013-0051/0052 and the nearest police station.
