Premier visits north mall
The Premier was joined by Gauteng MEC for Health Bandile Masuku to check health compliance in some of the stores with regards to COVID-19 regulations.
Gauteng premier David Makhura visited the Crossing Mall in Soshanguve on Tuesday to assess compliance with the level 4 lockdown regulations.
He was joined by Gauteng health MEC Bandile Masuku at the mall to check health compliance in some of the stores with regards to Covid-19 regulations.
Makhura said it was important for customers and stuff workers to maintain social distancing and use masks.
During the visit, he expressed disappointment in some stores that sold expired food.
“This causes a problem for our communities, we see that pattern everywhere and it contributes to the burden of disease in communities,” he said.
“We are checking general compliance, some of the businesses are not supposed to be open on level 4.”
Makhura said the department was looking for emerging virus hotspots.
“After this, we are going to Ivory Park, as it is one of the hotspots. We are seeing a shift; new hotspots are emerging in the township and which is a concern for us,” he said.
“Today we are targeting a few hotspots, but over the next few weeks we are going into the townships across the province where data tells us that there are more cases. If the data says more cases are coming out of that area, we will direct our energy to that intervention so that we can limit the spread of the virus.”

Makhura said the testing teams were screening and testing as many people as possible in Soshanguve.
“Our transport team is focusing on the taxi ranks to ensure they are complying. We also making sure the taxis are not carrying more than 70% (of passengers) and everyone commuting in a taxi must wear a mask,” he said.
“We have a comprehensive approach to ensure that all public transport are sanitised regularly.”
Makhura also engaged with customers and cashiers to check if safety measures were out in place by the store managers.
The premier will visit various shopping centres across Gauteng to ensure that they comply with level 4 lockdown regulations.
