Complaints centre to deal with reports of police brutality

Complaints can range from torture and degrading treatment to poor service by law enforcement officers.

The public can now report allegations of police brutality or cruel, inhumane and/or degrading treatment and/or punishment, committed by members of the police at a national complaints centre.

The SAPS announced the centre after the judgement handed down recently by Judge H Fabricius in the North Gauteng High Court in the matter of Collins Khosa.

The public may, for the duration of the Covid-19 state of disaster, report such complaints at the centre on the 0800-333-177 toll-free number.

They can also e-mail complaintsnodalpoint@saps.gov.za or service@saps.gov.za.

According to national police spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo such complaints can also be made at the nearest police station.

“Complaints can vary from torture and/or cruel, inhumane and/or degrading treatment and/or punishment, committed by law enforcement members including poor service delivery regarding police response, investigations, police negligence and police misconduct,” said Naidoo.

Complainants must contain detailed information such as full names and surname, identity number, residential/business address, telephone and cell phone numbers and an email address.

“They will also be required to give a detailed description of what occurred during the incident including the province/area in which the complaint originates as well as the date and time of the incident and details of the SAPS officials involved,” he added.
