Illegal firearms recovered by Lyttelton police

After the vehicle was spotted by in Main Road, close to Botha Avenue, the vehicle was pulled over.

Lyttelton police made two arrests during a during a police operation this week.

“On Monday, members of the roving team received information regarding a suspicious vehicle that was involved in an armed robbery in the Johannesburg area last month,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

“The officers mobilised all available resources and an operational plan was put in place.”

After the vehicle was spotted by in Main Road, close to Botha Avenue, the vehicle was pulled over.

There were two occupants inside the vehicle at the time.

Miller said while searching the vehicle, two unlicensed firearms were found hidden inside it.

“A preliminary investigation established that it was the same vehicle used in an armed robbery in Johannesburg, and the vehicle belonged to a rental company.”

Miller further said one of the suspects was out on bail for another offence.

The second suspect was allegedly wanted for various other serious crimes in the Gauteng area.

“The firearms will be sent to the ballistic unit to establish whether they were used in any crimes.”

The suspects faced initial charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Miller said Johannesburg-based detectives were busy establishing the possibility of linking the two suspects to the armed robbery case as well.

Lyttelton station commander Brigadier Mathlala commended all the officers involved in the arrests.

“We will show no mercy to criminals in our policing area,” Mathlala said.
