Moot schools disappointed as school reopening rescheduled

“We followed the checklist from the department of education to ensure that our learners return to a safe environment.”

Several school teachers, learners and parents were disappointed as the first day of school was postponed once again following the strict two-month lockdown.

With the easing of the current lockdown to level 3, schools in the Moot worked around the clock to get ready when the re-opening of school for matrics and grade 7 learners was postponed.

One such school was the Reformed Combined School Dirk Postma, who said they were ready for their learners to return to school on Monday.

High school principal Jaco Pretorius said they were ready for their learners to return.

“We followed the checklist from the Department of Education to ensure our learners return to a safe environment,” he said.

Rietondale High School said it was also ready for their learners to return, but also did not open their doors to learners on Monday.

Last week several Moot school shared informative step-by-step videos about the protocols and procedures learners needed to follow to go back to school.

One such a school was Hoërskool Oos-Moot who shared the procedure that would be followed when entering their premises.

The video provides a step-by-step guideline for learners to follow when they return to school.

Another video shared by the school showed the proper way to sanitise hands.

Another school in the Moot, Die Hoërskool Wonderboom, also announced on their Facebook page last week that they were also ready for learners to return on Monday.

School spokesperson Tessa Stolz said their learners also did not return to school on Monday.

Last week, they shared a video, which explained that they planned to combat the virus in five simple steps.

In the west of Pretoria, resident Eric Cordier, the grandfather to a grade 7 learner at Laerskool Simon Bekker, said he was disappointed that schools did not re-open.

“I got my granddaughter safe for school, equipped with a mask and gloves,” he said.

“The school allowed learners inside in the morning, but they contacted us later in the day to tell us they must stay home.”

The re-opening has been moved to next week Monday, 8 June.

The reschedule followed after the national department of education many schools were not ready because they have not received personal protective equipment for learners.
