UPDATE: Politician’s alleged murderer appears in court

"Thako abandoned his bail application and the matter was remanded to 24 August."

The man accused of murdering a local politician abandoned his bail application when he appeared at the Pretoria North magistrate’s court on Monday.

Monoko Francis Thoka (29) is facing charges of premeditated murder after he allegedly fatally stabbed Mapiti Matsena (54) in the chest at his house in Holy Hock Street in Doornpoort on Wednesday evening.

Matsena was Gauteng member of the provincial legislature and chairperson of the portfolio committee on community safety.

“Thoka abandoned his bail application,” said North Gauteng regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

“The matter was remanded to 24 August for the director of public prosecutions’ instruction in respect of matters potentially being heard at the High Court and further investigation.”
