Avoid walking alone on east footpaths – CPF warns
The public is advised to walk in groups to avoid common robberies.
The Mamelodi East CPF would like to warn the public to avoid footpaths and isolated areas at all cost.
Chairperson Eddie Mnguni said during the winter season, it got dark very fast, therefore, members of the public were advised to walk in groups in the morning and in the afternoon to avoid being robbed.
“We started patrolling in the identified hotspot areas, working hand-in-hand with the police,” said Mnguni.
“The aim of patrolling our neighbourhood is to keep the community and properties safe at all times.”
Most of the complainants said they were targeted by criminals in the early hours of the morning while on their way to work,” said Mnguni.
Residents also raised concerns about their safety at ATMs in the early hours.
Mnguni said they also patrol at ATMs, as criminals targeted people withdrawing money early in the morning.
The patrollers start patrolling from 04:00 in ward 23 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Mnguni said they were planning to expand to other wards and encouraged them to start their own streets committees.
The youth need to get involved in these patrols and start walking with their mothers and sisters for safety.
He said to avoid being the next victim, people should walk in groups to deter criminals.
“Our aim is to raise awareness because we have declared isolated areas as hotspots. The footpaths are isolated and hidden in the bush and criminals will take advantage of that,” said Mnguni.
The public should walk in groups of at least five to 10 people to avoid being robbed or becoming the next victim of any crime. The public must take this message very seriously.
“There is police visibility but the community is advised, especially if walking alone from or to work, to please use alternative roads or walk in groups.”
The public members are also advised to report any crime or any suspicious-looking person to the police on 08600-10111.
