Emergency number for motorists targeted by “spike gang”

“The emergency number will reach the AfriForum neighbourhood watch which is available to assist.”

AfriForum says it has a 24-hour emergency number/standby number to assist motorists targeted by so-called “spike” robbers on the N4 highway near Bronkhorstspruit and surrounding areas.

Earlier this year, the community in these areas formed a network aimed at helping stranded motorists on the highway and other roads along the N4, east of Pretoria, according to AfriForum safety coordinator Llewellyn Hemmens.

Hemmens said the spiking gang were usually operating along the N4 towards eMalahleni.

“The emergency number will reach the AfriForum neighbourhood watch which is available to assist,” said Hemmens.

Here are the AfriForum neighbourhood watch emergency standby numbers:

– Rayton/Cullinan: 083 271 6887

– Bronkhorstspruit: 066 246 8198

– Middelburg: 083 303 8784

Police have again warned motorists to be careful while driving at night following so-called “spiking” incidents in the east recently.

Last week, a motorist was shot and wounded after he drove over tyre spikes placed on the N4.

Silverton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Isaac Mculu said a case of attempted murder was opened for investigation.

He said motorists should always be vigilant on the road, especially when driving at night.

According to the police, the vehicle drove over rocks that were placed on the highway.

Mculu said no arrests have been made as yet.
