Heavy police presence for CBD marches
Motorists are advised to avoid affected areas as major traffic delays are expected due to upcoming marches.
There’s a heavy police presence in and around the CBD of Pretoria where hundreds of protesters have gathered on Wednesday morning, reports the Pretoria East Rekord.
Authorities are already strategically placed where streets will be affected.
Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said: “Motorists are advised to avoid the affected streets.”
He said alternative routes to use are Nana Sita, Visagie, Boom Streets and Es’kia Mphahlele Drive.
Marching organisations include members of the DA, EFF, SACP and Save South Africa.
Mahamba said: “The EFF will march from Church Square to the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court. They will use WF Nkomo going west, Bosman, Sophie Du Bruyn, Pretorius and also Francis Baard Streets.”
“The DA will march from Princess Park Street, turn left into Francis Baard Street until the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court.”
He said the Save South Africa organisation will gather at the corner of Bosman and Francis Baard Streets.
“All the demonstrations will commence at 08:00 and end at 15:00. Francis Baard Street between Sophie du Bruyn and Bosman Streets will be closed from 08:00 to 15:00.”
Metro police will be monitoring all streets that will be affected by the marches.
The situation is still calm with protesters singing and dancing despite several reports on social media of shops being vandalised and dustbins being set alight.
Motorists were also caught in the middle of the protests. EFF had charged at a national defense employee whom entered a blocked of street on Madiba street.
Motorists stood at a still as EFF members marched along their cars in early morning traffic.
