Firefighters for one day

Gr RR to 7 learners at Jabez Christian Academy recently learned more about fire and what to do should their homes catch fire.
Dorene Coetzee from Fauna and Flora and Natural Science Advancement (Fansa) explained to the learners that fire was dangerous, but could also be a good thing.
“Fire can keep you warm, give light and keep animals away when you’re camping,” she said.
Coetzee explained the use of a fireman’s “special” clothes to the learners by dressing two of them in the different uniforms.
“Firefighters use a special fireproof material for their uniforms to be able to go into a burning building to save people who are stuck inside,” she said.
Coetzee also showed them a model of a fire truck and described how the siren, lights, ladder and firehose worked.
The children also learned how to get out of a burning building and what could be used to extinguish a small fire. The lesson was followed by a story about the firefighter of the animal kingdom, the rhino, before ending the session with a game.
The learners had to crawl out of the hall like they were crawling out of a burning building, and to add a little excitement, Dorene turned on a smoke machine.
