More jobs for youths thanks to muni

Economic development in the Greater Tubatse Municipality continues to feed more of the poor with its current job creation

THE ongoing economic development in the Greater Tubatse Municipality continues to feed more of the poor with its current job creation, according to the municipality.

Nearly three months ago, the Greater Tubatse mayor Nkosi Mahlake revealed that the newly-established malls in the area of Tubatse created over 2 500 jobs that went mainly to the youth of Tubatse while many other part-time jobs were created during the construction of the mall, a milestone into addressing poverty challenges in the area.

On Monday, CV learned from the office of the mayor that a yet to be confirmed number of work opportunities would be up for grabs for the people, particularly the youth, of the Tubatse area during yet another construction, this time that of a casino.

According to municipal communications manager Thabiso Mokoena, half the jobs will be created once the multi-million rand casino is in operation.

Mahlake said it was the strong bond between his platinum land and its private sector that had seen unemployment figures taking a knock.

He maintained that job creation programmes in the municipality and the private sector were the ones winning the fight for human equality.

When delivering his state of the municipality address, Mahlake said: “When we assumed office in June 2011 we promised to unlock the challenges that hampered the possible economic developments around Burgersfort, and we are proud to announce that since September 2012 we have witnessed the opening of two malls, which has created job opportunities for more than 2 500 people, especially the youth.”

He also applauded the role played by the mining industry in improving the lives of the communities.

He said close contact and good relations with all stakeholders of the municipality had yielded the expected results.

Mahlake also made a strong call to the mining companies to dig deep in their pockets with the view to eradicate inequality, unemployment and poverty in Tubatse.

Meanwhile the soon to be established hydrogen fuel cell industry is also expected to provide both the communities and mines with an alternative source of energy, an issue that had been problematic for Tubatse.
