Greater Letaba muni halts R5,5 million road project

THE Greater Letaba Municipality recently put a road project costing over R5,5 million in the Makaba village area on hold

THE Greater Letaba Municipality recently put a road project costing over R5,5 million in the Makaba village area on hold after it was discovered that the contractor was apparently liquidated at the time of his appointment.

The 2km long project was started about two months ago, with the contractor having allegedly worked at a very slow pace, reportedly because of a lack of expertise.

According to municipal spokesperson, Lovers Maenetje, the municipality decided to terminate the contract because the appointed company could not perform its job as it was discovered that they were apparently liquidated.

“We are currently in the process of doing evaluations, then we will adjudicate new companies. This will be followed by the appointment of a new contractor who would carry the job forward,” Maenetje explained.

Maenetje was assuring concerned residents after they complained that the incomplete road was a nightmare for them as the area was slippery and became dangerous when it rained. Ngwako Morwasetlha, a resident of Makaba village said when they decided to engage the municipality on the matter, they were ignored. He said it was imperative that the project was completed as soon as possible as the road would serve as a link for both the people in Greater Letaba and Tzaneen once it was complete.

Maenetje appealed to Makaba village residents to be patient as the new contractor would soon continue the project.

“We would like to apologise to the Makaba community for the inconvenience and delay,” she said.
