DESPITE recent service delivery riots in the Thulamela area, the municipality was named the best municipality in the environmental category during the provincial Kamoso Awards presented by the department of public works and held in Polokwane last Thursday evening.

Thulamela Municipality’s manager of environment and waste management, Mmbulungeni Madi said the municipality was environmentally friendly and had even been declared an eco town – a town that facilitates a lifestyle that has as little impact on the environment as possible.

He said the municipality worked hard to implement environmental and cultural projects as part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). “We have created approximately 750 job opportunities in our environmental section. Thulamela was also crowned the best in the greening category in the Vhembe district. At provincial level we took the third position in the greening category. We conduct our business in an environmentally friendly way,” he said.

“We are increasing refuse-removal services to the rural areas. We have installed 1 200 dustbins in our municipality and we are still going to add some mor,” Madi said.

Public works MEC, Dickson Masemola, said the municipality should keep up its environmentally friendly work.
