POLOKWANE – Litres of water were wasted in Biccard Street when one of the fire hydrants in the area was allegedly opened to release pressure in the water pipes while municipal officials fixed a broken water pipe in the area on Tuesday afternoon.
Residents living in the area were frustrated and annoyed with the municipality because, while they were without water, water was wasted to release pressure.
A vehicle parked next to the fire hydrant was engulfed as the owner forgot to close the front passenger window and the water sprayed right into the car.
Matshidiso Mothapo, municipal spokesperson said: In the event of maintanance or a burst pipe, bleeding of the air must happen. The technicians on site will determine how much water has to be bled out of the system, however they always have to ensure they do not bleed out more than what can be considered wasteful. It’s standard procedure”.
