Water crisis in Giyani continues

MOPANI District Municipality (MDM) is maintaining silence over a water crisis being experienced in the Giyani area.

MOPANI District Municipality (MDM) is maintaining silence over a water crisis being experienced in the Giyani area.

This follows after there was a complete shutdown of the water supply system caused by the malfunctioning of the main plant, which supplies over 90% of the Giyani municipality’s population. The entire area was without water for two days.

This was confirmed by Greater Giyani Municipality spokesperson Steve Mavunda, in a media release issued last Tuesday. However, he said further enquiries should be made with the MDM.

Workers at the plant told CV that the problem was the raw-water pump that draws water from the dam to the purifying pumps. The reason for this breakdown could not be ascertained as in spite of several attempts, MDM spokesperson Neil Shikwambani had not responded by the time of going to print.

Meanwhile residents are gearing up for a meeting to discuss the problems being experienced with regard to poor water services. Many residents received exhorbitant bills for services they say they never used.

Water Crisis Committee chairperson, David Magagani said:

“We want them to cancel all the bills reflecting large amounts because they are not accurate.”
