POLOKWANE – The city’s mayor, Freddy Greaver warned contractors to make sure they delivered on their promises.
Speaking at a consultation meeting with contractors and consultants at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday, he said contractors would be released of their duties by the municipality if they did not deliver quality services.
Greaver said the Polokwane Municipality was putting measures in place to ensure projects meant for servicing communities were delivered on time and are of high quality.
He said contractors and consultants must ensure they deliver good work in good time.
He explained that it was difficult to comprehend how a contractor accepted work for the municipality, knowing full well they would fail and eventually be terminated, as this had a very negative impact on the services that residents yearned for.
“Why do you want to do business with us when you know you cannot deliver? You must understand that these projects are not meant for us, but there are people out there who are waiting for water and roads. Please help us deliver these projects on time. Please do your part,” he said.
Greaver said greed contributed to the challenge of not completing projects on time. “It becomes a problem when you look at Polokwane as a money-making machine, instead of a partnership to push the vision and aspirations of the municipality in order to deliver on its mandate. It is in our collective interest to deliver good quality in good time.”
He added that not completing projects on time resulted in roll overs that denied communities services and impacted negatively on the municipality’s spending pattern. “I won’t allow a repeat of multi-year project roll over in Polokwane as this robs our people of the basic services that they should enjoy. We are talking about the sons and daughters of Nelson Mandela and when he promised a better life for all, he also included them.”
Greaver said the municipality would do its part to ensure there were no hindrances for the contractors. “We have dealt with the problems internally and tightening of controls to ensure there were no hindrances.”We will ensure that come the first of July, all contractors are appointed so that we hit the ground running.”
He said come the new financial year the municipality will be sterner on contractors who do not perform as agreed.
“We guarantee that should we find any poor workmanship on any project we will go for the head of the consultant as they are the ones we pay to represent the interest of the municipality,” he said.
