THE Greater Tzaneen mayor, Dikeledi Mmetle, announced last Wednesday that the municipality had put aside R7 million for the upgrading of streets lights that are falling apart in the town.
Mmetle said the project would commence next week and was expected to be completed within six months.
She said areas that would benefit from the installation of streets lights included Tzaneen CBD, Letsitele, Haenertsburg, Nkowankowa and Lenyenye.
Spokesperson for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Neville Ndlala, said a contractor, Omphile Electrical Constructors, was appointed to carry out the work on the behalf of the municipality.
Ndlala said more than 331 street lights in Tzaneen were not functioning.
He said the scope of work only covered the replacement of existing street lights and not the installation of new ones.
“The main objective of the project is to save electricity costs related to the high electricity consumption rates associated with dysfunctional street lights. The funding for the project was secured from the national department of energy. The installation of the street lights, that offer new advanced technology, will also reduce the turnaround time for the fixing of dysfunctional street lights. Residents in all affected towns are urged to be patient, while the municipality sorts out this challenge,” Ndlala said.
