THE Nkgadima family, a child-headed household consisting of 11 children, were over the moon when a seven-room house in Ngwaritsi village outside Jane Furse was recently officially handed over to them by Thobela FM and Jane Furse Builders Supply.
The Nkgadima family had been living in a one-room shack. During the hand over, Thobela FM station manager, Mashongwa Matsena, said it was the station’s objective and responsibility to assist in restoring the dignity of people.
“We have a partnership with Jane Furse Builders Supply. We are very happy to see the Nkgadima family now living in a proper house; their situation has improved,” Matsena said.
She added that Thobela FM had also made a donation to the cancer ward at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital, and also took part in Mandela Day activities annually.
Speaking on behalf of Jane Furse Builders Supply, Kgola Mafiri, said after seeing the state that the one-room shack was in, they decided to rather build them a new house. “We also decided to go a step further by offering one of the family members employment. In this way, they can eventually become self-sustaining,” he said. He further said the company was involved in several projects aimed at improving the lives of the less fortunate.
Also present at the hand-over was cooperative governance, human settlements, and traditional affairs MEC, Makoma Makhurupetsi, who said government had programmes to assist those who were poverty stricken, but also needed the participation of private entities to assist in the alleviation of poverty.
Speaking on behalf of the Nkgadima family, Phumzile Nkgadima said it was an honour and a relief to receive a proper house.
“We were struggling. The situation was bad until Thobela FM and Jane Furse Builders Supply came to the rescue. During the rainy season it was tough and it was not easy for us to sleep because the shack was leaking and was too small to accommodate all of us. We thank everyone for being there for us. Keep up the good work. We are not the only ones who do not have a place to stay,” Nkgadima said.
