Muni pays R3m to former employee

A SETTLEMENT amount of close to R3 million was paid by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality to former employee, Hannes Muller, who the municipality dismissed some seven years ago.

A SETTLEMENT amount of close to R3 million was paid by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality to former employee, Hannes Muller, who the municipality dismissed some seven years ago.

This follows after the labour court overturned the decision taken by the disciplinary committee of the municipality and ordered them to reinstate Muller, as well as pay him the money that he would have earned had he not been dismissed.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, said the municipality complied with the court order, and appointed the services of Munro Consulting Actuaries to calculate the amount payable to Muller.

He said the money, less the amount to be paid to the South African Revenue Services (Sars), was paid to Muller by the beginning of May.

However, on May 19, Muller obtained a warrant of execution against the municipality for the balance of the money, which nearly resulted in some of the municipality’s assets being attached.

“The amount Mr Muller wanted us to pay over to him is the amount that must be paid over to Sars, which has already been paid to them,” Ndlala said, adding that the matter was now considered closed.
