POLOKWANE – Stinking sewer water flooded the road and pavement in Schoeman Street between Bodenstein and Rabe Street at various times over the past week, much to the disgust of business owners and their customers.
Also in the area affected, is a provincial government building. According to the security guards stationed at this building, they personally reported the matter to the municipality to no avail.
A manager of one of the businesses in the area confirmed their claim. “Reporting the matter to the municipality did not yield any results. We are forced to drive around and through the sewer water and everything ends up stinking,” he said.
Maria Letsatsi, one of the street vendors who sell food, said she had been selling food there for the last five years, but was now forced to move her stall because of the stench.
“I have regular customers that depend on me. I have been away for over a week and I am not sure if my customers will return when I do,” she said, adding that in her line of business there was a lot of competition.
Municipal spokesperson, Malesela Maubane, said the municipality attended to complaints and reports when they are made.
He urged residents to make sure they reported municipal issues to the correct units to ensure the fastest assistance possible.
