POLOKWANE – The Lions Club of Pietersburg inducted their new president at Touch of Eden on Friday, where a number of awards were also handed out.

Special guests for the evening were Driaan Opperman and Sunette Scheepers from Amigos, Bertus Ridgemiller from Discovery and Challeen van der Hoogen, and Marco and Marguerite Erasmus from Momentum.

Zone chairperson, Beaulieu Maré, said the Lions Club of Pietersburg was one of the most highly regarded clubs for their services and camaraderie. “Not only do we rise to every challenge, we are fierce warriors,” said Mare.

Outgoing president, Karl Varkevisser gave a report on his tenure as president.

“I’d like to thank all my fellow Lions for putting their trust in me. We managed to keep most members and even grow a bit,” he said.

He highlighted events such as the bikers day at Martha Hofmeyr Old Age Home, the Cansa Relay For Life and the Cansa trolley race and the toy run.

“Anke Varkevisser also helped to hand over screens to schools in Polokwane and Johan van der Westhuizen helped with the collection of frames for glasses that were presented to residents of Martha Hofmeyr. We also donated money to the Bible Association and with the help of Dalize Venter, we collected can food in the Lets Can Hunger campaign,” said Varkevisser.

Lions who received awards were Anke Varkevisser, Johan van der Westhuizen, Paul Venter, Dalize Vener, Driaan Opperman and Juan van der Merwe.

Past district governor, Nic Maré inducted the new president, Paul Venter.

“The definition of a leader is someone who has followers,” he told guests. “There are different ways of leading. We have to celebrate the success of Karl and be supportive of Paul. Paul now has to lead, manage and preside over meetings. Running a successful club is not a one man job, it is a joined venture.”

After receiving the president’s chain, Venter said: “there are a lot of people I’d like to thank, but a special thank you to my wife, Dalize. I do not plan on taking on new projects but rather to build the club. I also need to try to fill Karl’s shoes.”

Lastly Karl handed over pins to Paul, Dalize, Anke and himself for 100% attendance for 12 consecutive months.
