Mogalakwena Mayor offers support to cancer fighter

MOKOPNAE – In commemorating October as Cancer Awareness Month and giving emotional healing, the Mayor of the Mogalakwena Municipality, Parks Sebatjane, members of the Royal Council (Bakgoma le Bakgomana) of Chief Lesiba Kekana and family members recently visited Matin Manyane (50) at George Mukhari Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa.

“Manyane, a state patient from Mosate Village, has been suffering from skin cancer for the last 20 years. He has been treated at both Voortrekker – and Polokwane Provincial Hospital, respectively until he was referred to George Mukhari Hospital where he is now receiving medical treatment,” read a statement by the Mogalakwena Municipality.

Speaking to members of the media yesterday at Ga-Rankuwa, Sebatjane said: “The visit was a way of giving hope to Manyane who only started with treatment 20 years after he was diagnosed. While he is receiving medical treatment far from us and family members it is important that we supplement the distance with non-medical healing in the form of emotional support.

“We are happy with the reconstruction developments and the progress of the best health treatment he is receiving from our dedicated medical practitioners. Manyane has been operated on and will soon undergo plastic surgery.

“This is a sign that our public or government hospitals are just as capable of curing and taking care of patients as good as the private hospitals,” Sebatjane added.

Sebatjane further stated: “Manyane will be an ambassador to show that cancer can be treated and defeated. In co-operation with the Provincial Health Department we will embark on a programme to raise awareness about the importance of going for regular check-ups, as prevention is better than cure.

“We have to assume a positive and pro-active approach to the fight against cancer, considering that solutions do exist across the continum of cancer and that these solutions are within our reach.

“To our community members, we maintain that prevention is better than cure and that choosing a healthy lifestyle goes a long way in solving the health problems that continue to unnecessary beseech our people,” Sebatjane advised.

Mayor Sebatjane commended Michael Hlokota and First Lady, Thobeka Madiba Zuma, for the intervention of ensuring that Manyane receives the best medical treatment.
