Mayor distributes reflective collars to curb road carnage

During the recent closing of Transport Month, the Mogalakwena Mayor, Parks Sebatjane distributed over 4 000 reflective collars to livestock owners in an attempt to decrease the number of livestock killings on the roads

LIMPOPO – The reflective collars were distributed to to livestock owners in Uitzicht village.

The department of transport, safety and liaison has to date, distributed around 150 000 reflective collars since 2009.

According to the MEC for transport, safety and liaison, Mokaba-Phukwana, the province has seen many road accidents that involved stray animals, and the distribution of reflective collars has contributed positively towards the reduction of these accidents.

She indicated that the most often occurring causes of road fatalities are human factors, vehicle fitness and road conditions.

These can be addressed through enforcement, road maintenance, education and awareness, she added.

“Stray animals contribute adversely in contrast to our attempt to fulfil the road safety mandate, and the department alone cannot effectively address the challenge of road crashes caused by stray animals,” she said.

“The composition of uncontrolled stock which poses a challenge to road safety is 654 104 for cattle and 28 167 for donkeys,” Mokaba-Phukwana said.
