Malungana a beauty with a purpose

Khanyisa Malungana, Miss Giyani 2015, has had a very eventful calendar since winning the title in December

LIMPOPO – Malungana (20), who is the sister of award-winning producer, DJ Gami, was thrilled to walk away as queen, and not because of the prizes or the popularity that came with it, but because of the vision she had.

“I knew that with the title I had a greater chance of reaching out to people and my experience so far has been incredible. I get to touch lives in a way I never thought I could,” Malungana said.

Though she had never given the modelling and pageant world much thought it was the influence of friends and followers on social media that encouraged her to give modelling a chance as a career, or at least a hobby until she finished school.

The first pageant she participated in was Miss Dzumeri where she walked away as first runner-up. Malungana, from N’wamarhanga village outside Giyani, has already organised a clothing donation drive to donate to people in Mozambique, a country whose poverty touched her father, Elias, so much that he vowed to help out. Malungana also saw it as an opportunity to educate their community against xenophobia.

As Miss Giyani, Malungana has attended several soccer tournaments held in various communities, as well as hosted grooming sessions with young girls who admire her.

She has also organised a drive which will see that needy people will receive washing powder and bath soap. She said she is ensuring she gets a lot done before school opens soon. Malungana, who was a second year optometry student at the University of Johannesburg until last year, is starting on her LLB at the University of Pretoria this year.

She stressed the gratitude she has towards her supportive family which encourages her and her siblings to pursue their passions always.
