
LIMPOPO – The arrests follow the violent outbreak of protests actions and the subsequent destruction and damage to property, which include in the Vuwani, Hlanganani and Levubu areas earlier this month.
“The councillor ( in his 50’s) from the Makhado District Municipality was arrested late Saturday afternoon after attending a special prayer session at Mashau… the session was arranged to pray for the end of the violence in the area, said provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto.
A total of 17 people were arrested previously, and with the four additional arrests it now brings the total to 21.
Eleven of the 17 suspects previously appeared in the Malamulele Magistrates Court on 9 May whereby they were remanded in custody.
The four suspects will go to the Malamulele Magistrates’ Court on Monday for their first appearance. The 17 suspects will also appear on Monday, 16 May and Tuesday 17 May at Malamulele and Thohoyandou respectively for the second time to apply for bail concluded Otto.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the province, Lt Genl Ledwaba welcomed the arrests and reiterated that dedicated integrated teams are still working in the area and that more arrests can be expected.
