POLOKWANE – In many cases the robbers only want the money or items and are not there to hurt or kill people as long as they get what they want, he said.
He added that the main thing to remember is that the chance of a robber harming a victim is much less when the victim complies with the demands of the robber.
“Do not fight when a robbery is in progress, you will just aggravate the situation which may lead to unwanted violence.” Ramoshaba said.
After a robbery Ramoshaba said that people can assist the police investigation by taking the following steps:
• Call the police immediately after the robbery – The person who makes the call should be able to stay on the line with the dispatcher if needed.
• Secure the area by locking the doors and request all witnesses to remain on the scene until the police arrive – If a witness must leave, obtain his or her name, address and telephone number.
• All witnesses should individually write down a description of the suspects – Do not discuss the robbery or compare notes about the robber’s appearance with anyone as this can effect the case against the suspect.
• Protect the crime scene. Do not handle anything the robbers may have touched – If needed, put in a safe place to give to police. This may be an important piece of evidence.
Crime prevention tips:
Ramoshaba said that with all crime prevention is the best way for residents to protect themselves is to be pro active and try and prevent robberies from happening.
“In many cases police have found that doors and windows have been left open. It is important that people realise that the first step to take in preventing a crime is to take away access to the house by locking doors and closing windows.” Ramoshaba said.
“Never open your door to anyone you do not know. Robbers have been known to make use of different ways to enter the house as them gaining entry means that the deal is done in most cases and when entry is gained the chance of overpowering a suspect is easier.” Ramoshaba added.
He also added that being informed goes a long way to make sure that precautions can be taken and that families should have an active emergency plan that is practiced and discussed regularly.
“The best thing people in and around the city can do is to join the different Community Policing Forums(CPF’s) as they are formed by people staying close to you. people who know the area you stay in and can be at your side a lot sooner then police in some cases.” Ramoshaba said.
