‘Death road’ claims three more lives

Three people died in an accident on Sunday afternoon on the N1 outside Mookgophong after a sedan and an SUV collided head-on.

LIMPOPO – Kagiso Mootane, Spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Transport, reported: “The driver of the sedan lost control of the vehicle after one of the tyres burst and crashed head-on into the SUV. Three people passed away on the scene, and five people were rushed to the Mookgophong Hospital after sustaining mild to serious injuries.” Investigations are ongoing. This follows only a week after the tragic passing of the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Joy Matshoge, after she also lost control of her vehicle on the N1 outside Mokopane.

THE N1 between Mokopane and Mookgophong was recently renamed by motorists as ‘death road’ due to the fact that it has claimed numerous lives in accidents this year. One of the drivers that passed by the accident scene on Sunday tweeted: “Something seriously needs to be done about accidents on this road.”

Mootane commented on the above statement by saying: “As the Department of Transport in Limpopo we are very concerned about the high rate of accidents occurring on the N1 South, around Mokopane and Mookgophong. We are losing lives and thus we urge our motorists to be more vigilant, reduce speed, be patient with each other and comply with the rules of the roads even in the absence of traffic officers.”
