23 arrested for destruction of police property

LIMPOPO – A total of 23 people have been arrested after members from the Ga Mampa community stormed the Mecklenburg Police Station on Wednesday night, say the police.

According to information members from the community had opened a case against a man who allegedly stole money from them by promising jobs.

“The community became angry when they received information that the man was released and stormed the Community Service Centre and pelted the building with stones,” says provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto.

“Two sliding doors and several windows at the centre were damaged. No injuries were reported adds Otto.

18 women and 5 men were arrested on the charges of public violence and malicious damage to property.

The situation is still being monitored concludes Otto.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the province expressed his shock and outrage over this incident.
“It is a very sad day when members of the community attack the upholders of the law in the country. There are various other ways in which members of the community can express their dissatisfaction or concern” he stressed.
He called for calm in the area and requested the community leaders in the area to work with the management structures in the area to restore peace and calm in the station area.
