Injured woman (50) brought to safety after spending 2 nights on mountain

The terrain was so difficult that rescue team members had to take turns in carrying her on their backs

LIMPOPO – A 50-year old woman from from Matloulela village, Maake who was stranded on the mountains in Lekgalametse Nature Reserve since Sunday 24 July was rescued on Tuesday morning.

Martha Thobejane and the women who stayed with her after she slipped and broke her ankle on Sunday were brought to safety during a combined rescue operation said provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto.

She explained: “The woman were in the  mountains cutting grass when the incident happened. A few left to alert the police while some stayed with the unfortunate woman on Sunday and Monday night.”

“The SAPS Air Wing were unfortunately unable to access the area due to cloudy, misty and rainy conditions in the area.”

On Tuesday morning members of the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, K9 and EMS from Makhado and Giyani  succeeded in bringing the woman to safety added Otto.

“It was not easy and it took them the whole day to do so. Sometimes the terrain was so difficult that they  had to take turns in carrying the woman on their backs.”

Thobejane was taken to the Dr CN Phatudi Hospital and is in a satisfactory condition.
