LIMPOO -Mamphekgo Lion Shalang was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Groblersdal Regional Court two weeks ago.
Shalang was arrested in 2013 in connection with the rape of a 10-year-old girl at the village in April 2013 in Moutse West.
According to police, Shalang was in police custody since 2013. He applied for bail several times but his applications were denied.
Marble Hall police and the family of the minor, who cannot be named to protect her identity, welcomed his sentenced.
Const Lethunya Mmuroa, Marble Hall Police Spokesperson, said the sentence was a major breakthrough in the fight against crime.
“As police we are satisfied with his 20 years’ imprisonment. This will further serve as a deterrent to criminals and would-be criminals that crime has no place in our communities. We also like to thank the investigating officer on the case for the hard work put in to ensure the suspect does not get away with the crime, said Mmuroa.
