3 arrested after argument turns violent at voting station

The argument ensued after a voter answered his cellphone in the Xigalo primary school IEC voting station

LIMPOPO –  Three suspects, two men and a woman, who were arrested after attacking police members during an argument at a voting station in Malamuele on Wednesday appear in court on Friday.

The suspects face charges of malicious damage to property, assault and attempted murder.

The woman was released on R 5000 bail. The men still in custody. They will appear again on Monday.

“The argument ensued after a voter answered his cellphone in the Xigalo primary school IEC voting station on Wednesday said provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto .

“An official from the IEC informed him that is not allowed to answer a phone in polling station and an argument started ensued.”

“The male and female suspects joined in the argument and back up from the police station was summoned.”

When they police members attempted to disperse the group the members threw stones at them. In the chaos one of the suspects managed to grab a police service pistol and run away. Another police member was assaulted.

Three warning shots were fired but no one was shot she reported.

A police member in a  police van chased the suspect with the service pistol. In the chase the member lost control of the vehicle and collided with a fence knocking over a woman.  The injured woman sustained injuries and was taken to Malamulele hospital in a stable condition.

The suspect threw the firearm away but is was later recovered.

Voting continued as normal after the incident. SAPS members did not sustain serious injuries concluded Otto.
