Rhino poaching trial postponed to 2017

Judge Nomonde Mngquibisa-Thusi last week provisionally postponed the trial of local businessman and game farmer Dawie Groenewald, his wife Sariëtte and eight co-accused.

POLOKWANE – Their next appearance in the North Gauteng High Court is set for 15 June 2017.

The reason behind yet another postponement relates to an ongoing battle about a moratorium on domestic trade in rhino horn, for which an outcome is awaited.

Groenewald is believed to have orchestrated a rhino poaching syndicate.

According to reports, Jaap Cilliers SC, who represents Groenewald, told the court the moratorium formed an integral part of the charge sheet and it was an absolute necessity for the criminal trial to get clarity on the issue.

Groenewald and his co-accused face more than 1 800 charges including racketeering, money laundering, illegal hunting of rhino, dealing in rhino horn and contravening the Biodiversity and Prevention of Organised Crime Acts.

Those suspected to have been a part of the syndicate were arrested in 2010 after an investigation linked them to poaching incidents over a four-year period.

Groenewald was in 2010 detained in the US and eventually fined $30 000 for among others selling an illegal leopard hunt to an American sports hunter.
